Toshiba Portege R-Series was launched in 2004, the R700 we examine today is the seventh iteration. This range has always been to produce the thinnest, lightest laptop possible for professional users on the go. At the recent memory of the R500 and R600 both stuck strictly to this brief, sometimes too strict. In R700, however, it seems that Toshiba could have learned to stop chasing titles, and do a better laptop later.

Graphics, predictable, are provided by Intel HD graphics chip, which is low power, but has no stomach for any meaningful action graphics. This lifestyle should suit business machine, however, as the hard disk of 320 GB and its protection in freefall.

Among the firm characteristics other fingerprint reader above, which is joined by a TPM (Trusted Platform Module) for secure authentication and encryption. Network connectivity includes both Wi-Fi 802.11n and Gigabit Ethernet, Bluetooth 2.1 and is handy for all your mobile devices. Other models in the range are also equipped with integrated 3G HSDPA modems. As this is a business machine you also get a generous three-year warranty, which makes the £ 850 inc. Look VAT rates as a good value for money.

Visually the R700 is quite a departure from previous models. Out is the plastic looking slightly out of money, is a very intelligent, black brushed metal on the lid and the body. This immediately gives the R700 a credibility more worthy of its target market, while improving the already slim 16.8mm to 25.7mm () and lightweight (1.46 kg) of the chassis. The strengthening of this turn is to use a keyboard isolation, the black keys merging perfectly with their environment.

Dig a little further, however, and the DNA of the R500 and R600 is obvious. Still present is incredibly thin and flexible cover, while the available fingerprint reader between the touchpad buttons and chrome hinges have been lifted directly from its predecessors. In other words, this is not an entirely new machine, but an evolution on a theme.

No, it should be emphasized that this is a bad thing, especially as more interesting developments have taken place under the hood. Whereas previous Portégé used a little slow for low-voltage processors, the R700 following the Sony VAIO Z series using full-fat Intel Core i. Depending on which model you choose, it could mean a Core i3, i5 and i7, but in the case of our model of mid-distance (the R700-15U) is a Core i3 2.26. In most cases this should not suffice, if the 2 GB of RAM for this model is a shadow on the side stingy.
